Environmental Noise Assessments
Noise and Sound Services carries out environmental noise assessments that are required by Councils and the EPA when noise from a proposed development has the potential to cause annoyance. We measure the existing background noise and then measure or predict the potential noise from the development. Where required, we recommend practical mitigation measures to reduce the noise impact.

Commercial
Commercial Noise Assessments
Environmental noise assessments are often required for new religious establishments, childcare premises, dog kennels and service stations. Noise and Sound Service, we measure the existing background noise and then measure or predict the potential noise from the development. Mitigation measures, if required, are recommended to reduce noise impact. Compliance with the Noise Policy for Industry 2017 (NSW) is generally required.
The following are examples of environmental noise assessments for commercial premises:
Childcare Centre
Noise from children at play in childcare centres. Carefully designed noise barriers are often required to shield neighbouring premises.
New Greenfield Sites
The background noise level is logged, and potential noise sources are calculated and assessed using the Noise Policy for Industry.
Car Wash
If car wash activities are near neighbouring premises, noise mitigation is required to meet the Noise Policy for Industry requirements.
Residential
Residential Noise Solutions
Environmental noise assessments are often required by Councils for the installation of new inclinators, air conditioners, pool pumps and other equipment. Acoustical measurements are taken of the existing background noise. Noise predictions are then made of the potential noise impact, and mitigation measures are recommended if required to meet Council’s requirements.
The following are examples of environmental noise assessments for residential premises:
New Air Conditioners
Councils may require, as a condition of consent for a DA for homes, that proposed air conditioning equipment when installed will meet 5 dB over the background noise criteria at neighbouring premises.
Pool Pump
Some NSW Councils require new pool equipment to be assessed prior to use, to protect neighbours from excessive noise.
Inclinator
Inclinator motors and/or rail squeal may require mitigation to shield neighbours from noise.
